Thursday 5th January 2006
Well all the waiting is almost over. It has been 12 long months, almost to the day, since we had confirmation from our agent that we are off on "the journey of a lifetime". Today we were notified that the 12th January is the day we fly out of OZ.
Judy & Doug are off around the world on a freighter ship!
The ship will be the Rickmers Jakarta, operated by the Rickmers Shipping Company from Hamburg, Germany. We will board in Singapore next week, on the 14th ( to be confirmed), and then we head off for 120 days (give or take a few). Have a look at the Rickmers site, www.rickmers.linie.de/, and it details the ship, deck and cabin layout, and the "Pearl String" concept showing the basic rotation that we will follow. It is a freighter, so they will add/take off ports as required to suit the cargo.
We have booked the "owners suite" but at this stage we don't know exactly what this consists of. We reckoned that for that period of time we needed as much room as possible, even if just to be able to get a bit of power into the books and things we will no doubt throw at one another while we are trying to get into pre retirement relax mode. Seriuously though, if it is going to be 120 days, we think we need a bit of space to spread out our belongings, and this suite is supposed to be the largest on the ship.
All the bags and cases are packed (except for the last few little things) and we have our foreign cash and travellers cheques. It's just a matter of finishing off the loose ends at all of our businesses now, and we are on our way. We have an extraordinarilly close and loving relationship, and working so close to one another in our businesses for the past 20 odd years has made us even closer. This will be our time together, our time to enjoy the fruits of a lot of hard work.
The next post should be from Singapore, that is if nothing unforseen transpires in the next 7 days, so stand by for a story to behold! What may come up in the next 4 months, things we have no control over, makes the whole idea of this trip the more exciting for us.
You will be the first to know!
